In a "toy story" published during the First World War, the French toy protagonist and others from France's overseas empire mobilize after word spreads of war between France and Germany. At the front, the little French soldier drops a chestnut bomb on the fat German general below and receives a medal for his actions. After a plane crash, imprisonment, and escape, the toy soldier rejoins the allied forces, only to be wounded in action, hospitalized, and nursed back to health.
