Xanthus Russell Smith’s was not an eye witness to the naval battle at Santiago. His interpretation of the battle may have based his account on experiences during his service with the U.S. Navy in the Civil War. The oval profile portrait inset in the upper right corner depicts Rear Admiral Schley, the victor of the sea battle. Smith’s artwork was published by Joseph Hoover’s firm, one of the largest producers of chromolithographs in the country at the time of the Spanish-American War.
