This first hostile engagement of the Spanish-American War took place in the Philippines, where U.S. Commodore Dewey destroyed Spain’s fleet in Manila Bay. Louis Kurz, a veteran of the Civil War and partner in the Kurz and Allison chromolithograph publishing firm, was probably responsible for this colorful and dramatic rendering of a naval battle that he, himself, did not witness.
